1946-48: The Palladio printing works was founded in Vicenza, in the tough but hope-filled period after the Second World War. Back then, the technology in use was still lithography (from the Greek lithos, stone: the printing plates were actually made of stone). The entrepreneurial intuition of the Marchis, a family already established in the silk production business, led the founders, Girolamo, Aldo and Antonio, to invest in printing. This they did by taking over the prestigious Raschi lithographic and printing works, which had been in business since the late 19th century. They rechristened the firm SITAP, which stood for "Societa' Industria Tipolitografica A. Palladio", the A. Palladio lithographic and printing industry company.
